“Do I need to learn the Hindi script before I learn how to speak Hindi as a beginner?”
“Do I need to learn all the Hindi grammar rules to talk to my Indian partner?”
“Where do I start?”
“Can watching Bollywood movies help me learn Hindi?”
Yes! I know!! All these thoughts go through the mind of a Hindi beginner at least once. But trust me, the decision and the resolve to learn Hindi and to stay committed to the process is the first step in itself. Yes, there are grammar rules and yes, there is a script, but before anything else, the commitment to learn the language is most important. It’s very easy to give up, or to not trust the process, or to not be able to let go of the awkwardness or shyness while speaking Hindi.

The First Step to Learning Hindi as a Beginner: Commitment
If you are a complete beginner, the first step is the decision and the resolution to stick to your decision, and that’s true for any language. I can speak from my mistakes. I was learning Spanish. It was not for school curriculum, I took those lessons because of my own interest but I didn’t stick to it. I gave up once I completed my beginner stage. And hence, when I teach Hindi to my students, I ensure that this does not happen. In my Hindi lessons, I ensure that language learning stays fun and becomes intuitive, so you don’t even feel like giving up, and it becomes easy and enjoyable to learn it and speak it, so you enjoy the process as much as the result.

Why Your Reason for Learning Hindi Matters
Secondly, be very clear about why you want to learn Hindi. Are you learning Hindi so you can talk to your Indian in-laws confidently?Do you have a Hindi exam to give? Are you working in India and hence need Hindi for the same? Because your goal will decide your path.
If you are learning Hindi so you can talk with your Indian partner, immersing yourself in book-Hindi and heavy grammar is not the most effective way to learn spoken Hindi. In that case, focusing on conversational Hindi and spoken practice is the right approach.
Is grammar still important? Yes, obviously it’s important. But the learning method needs to be fit for you. For example, if I am going to be talking with Indian relatives and in-laws, it’s more important for me to know that we use plural forms with elders in Hindi, even if we are talking to one person, because that’s considered respectful, than memorizing things like karak ke naam, samas ke types, or literary verb forms that even native speakers don’t consciously use in daily life.
Hence, in my personalised one-on-one Hindi lessons, each student’s sessions are tailored to their learning goals. If there are specific grammar topics you are struggling with, I will cover that. If you need me to start from scratch for you, I will do that. Practice exercises, videos, and meme-based tools are also as per your needs. For example, I may do a role-play speaking activity of dinner-table small-talk conversations if you are learning Hindi to talk with your in-laws, and I will choose a shopping simulation activity if you are learning Hindi for your next travel.
This saves your time, makes the process relatable and relevant, and hence leads to better results.
How to Overcome Shyness While Speaking Hindi
But none of this helps unless, as a new learner, you do not let your awkwardness go away! I always, always tell my students to be shameless! Yes! Be shameless when you are learning a new language. It’s not your mother tongue. You did not grow up learning or speaking it. You are already a winner for making the attempt. Don’t care if people make fun of you. I know that it’s hard, but remember there will be no progress unless you speak. And if you keep waiting to be perfect before you speak, you won’t get better.
Whenever my students struggle with this, one thing I suggest to my students learning Hindi for conversation is to start with texting in Hindi before speaking with native speakers.Texting gives you the time to think and type, and also reduces the shyness in conversing in a new language. A lot of times, I do “reply to this WhatsApp message” or “WhatsApp chat in Hindi” kind of activities in class before I start doing role-play activities, and I see that it helps. So yes, have Hindi conversations with native speakers, and remember it’s a process. You will not understand everything in one go, and that’s perfectly fine.
